Department of English
The Department of English was established in 1960. Mr. Phansalkar H. G. and Mr. Saolapurkar V.K. were the founding fathers of the department. They put in a lot of efforts to build up the department. Mr. Phansalkar, HOD, played an instrumental role in enriching the department. Their hard work came to fruition when the Post-Graduate course in English was introduced. The English literary Association has been established to provide a plat form for students’ creative talent. After retirement of Prof. S.V. Saolapurkar as HOD in the year 1998, Prof. T. S. Jadhavar took the charge as HOD. Prof. T.S. Jadhavar retired in the year 2004. From the year 2004 onwards, Dr. S.D. Pawar has been heading the department.
Shri Shivaji Mahavidyalaya, Barshi is affiliated to Solapur University, Solapur and is a reputed college in the Solapur district. The college has been running P.G. classes in English since 1972 for the students from rural area and economically weaker sections. Recently, the department has been recognized as a Ph.D. research centre (2016-17). Every year near about fifty students sign up for the P.G. classes. While some who have completed their P.G. rely on the library for the preparation of SET/Net and other examinations. Some new papers are introduced after every three years. Considering all these needs, the department has maintained the departmental library from the year 2008-09 giving free accession to the students. The Department set up language laboratory in 2011 for linguistic and communicative competence.
